Nicholas Thorpe has been Musical Director of The Newstead Abbey Singers since 1987. His early musical training was as a chorister in Southwell Minster Choir, in which he served for over 50 years until July 2013. He trained and conducted his first choir for the House Music Competion while still at school.
On leaving school he trained as a music teacher at King Alfred’s College, Winchester where he directed a student chamber choir and held a choral scholarship to Winchester Cathedral Choir. After training he returned to Southwell to a Layclerkship and a series of teaching posts in Nottinghamshire. He became accompanist to the Freda White Choir in Mansfield and when Freda retired took over the baton and conducted them for ten years before accepting he invitation to direct the Newstead Abbey Singers.
His first concert with the Newstead Abbey Singers was in Mansfield Woodhouse Methodist Church and his second (after only being in charge for less than two months) was in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Shortly after joining the Newstead Abbey Singers he became a member of the Association of British Choral Directors and has attended every annual convention. He became chair of the Midland Region and served on Council for six years, three of them as Deputy Chair. In 1997 he was appointed conductor of Southwell Choral Society.
Nick has made several arrangements for the choir and collaborated with Stella Cowmeadow, a former member, in composing extended works for Christmas and Summer concerts.
His wife, Vicky is now a member of the choir and their two sons have played in the Christmas Concerts and occasionally sung with the choir.
